Gov. Eric Holcomb Reimposing COVID Restrictions

As cases of COVID-19 rise in Indiana, Governor Eric Holcomb is considering reimposing restrictions on most of the state. Out of the 92 counties in the state, 87 will be affected by the restrictions. Some counties will only be allowed to have gatherings with up to 25 people while those in other counties can have gatherings of up to 50 people. Religious gatherings are permitted, and if other events require higher attendance numbers, they will have to apply for approval. Everyone must continue to wear their masks and social distance when possible.

The state of Indiana has had a 200% increase in COVID-19 cases. It is not just Indiana where the number of cases are increasing, there are rising numbers across the country. According to experts, the public easing up on guidance as well as colder weather may be to blame. The Indiana Hospital Association reported that they are filling up with patients rapidly and are concerned about being overwhelmed.

Do COVID Restrictions Affect Families?

Families across the state of Indiana are handling the restrictions with COVID differently. There are those families that are able to manage life changes quite well and others where the impact has been challenging. Those that have been struggling during the pandemic have experienced children developing depression and anxiety, increased tensions between parents, and an overall sense of fear and despair.

For families that have been financially impacted by the pandemic, the stress can be at an all-time high. According to a recent survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 41% of the respondents said that they developed mental health issues during the pandemic that put a strain on their lives. Of these respondents:

  • Over 30% said that they were suffering from symptoms of anxiety or depression
  • More than 25% said that they were suffering symptoms of stressor-related disorder
  • More than 10% said that their substance use increased
  • More than 10% said that they thought about harming themselves and putting an end to their lives in the last 30 days
