The addition of homeschooling thrust upon many Indiana families amid the crisis has led some to wonder how they can effectively keep their child on-track outside of a traditional school environment. Indiana University-Purdue Senior Hannah Li, with the help of some of her college friends, developed Knowledge Share to help Indiana students. Knowledge Share is free and it provides online tutoring for all students in every grade-level.
Indiana public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade have access to eLearning until the end of the school year. Li’s Knowledge Share would connect college students with grade school children in the state to help them learn how subjects like math would have been taught to them if they were still being instructed by teachers in school. The Indiana Department of Education is on board and supportive of these services.
Li’s online learning platform currently has 12 tutors that are either current college students or have recently graduated. All of the tutors have differing majors to accommodate the many subjects that the out-of-school children need. Li was able to find help getting Knowledge Share up and running with fellow IUPUI student Ian Harmon. Currently, the learning platform has not taken hold with families across the state, but with further coverage, getting the word out that Knowledge Share is available to help could boost children’s performance and apprehension of their grade’s schoolwork.
What Online Learning Resources are Available to Students in Indiana?
The overall consensus by the tutors in Knowledge Share and the Indiana Department of Education is that the more resources there are for residents the better. Not only can these resources help supplement an at-home learning environment, but they can also provide a much-needed reprieve for parents with multiple children at different grade-levels. Additionally, they may offer a welcome break for those balancing homeschooling and working from home at the same time.
Other free learning resources for Indiana students to utilize include AskRose Homework Help which is made possible through the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and by funding from the Lilly Endowment Inc. AskRose has more than 100 students who provide tutoring through a variety of channels, including over the phone and via chatbox. They also provide feedback through email communications for children that are in sixth grade to 12th for all students in the country.
Stand for Children Indiana is a non-profit education advocacy organization that provides the state’s schoolchildren with a free homework help hotline. This service is staffed with volunteer help. They also offer tutoring services for Central Indiana children in grades K-6th grade that needs help in math and Language Arts subjects. The tutoring services are available in both English and Spanish.
Last, families in the state can also use the Call & Learn Hotline accessible for students up to grade 12. This resource is staffed by retired teachers who are a part of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.
