Celebrity Divorces

In our day and age, divorce has become prevalent – and when celebrities are involved it becomes instant news. It is no surprise that once a person is deemed as a celebrity that they are revered as a public figure, and almost all of their actions become public knowledge. Whether it is from the army of paparazzi that flock to every hot restaurant and major airport waiting to catch a glimpse of an A-list star and a new significant other, or from a statement issued by a celebrity couple’s publicist, news of a divorce gets around. Once a couple splits, newspapers and tabloids are inundated with alleged details from their divorce. Although it is unclear how accurate this information is, one thing is for sure: regardless of the circumstances surrounding a celebrity divorce, it usually costs a lot of money.

Most Expensive Celebrity Divorces

Throughout the years, celebrities have been part of an elite group of society that people often look up to. However, just as quickly as two celebrities can plan a multi-million dollar wedding, their marriage can end. Perhaps it is the pressure associated from their highly publicized lives or the copious amounts of temptation surrounding Hollywood’s finest; but divorce for celebrities usually entails the forfeiture of millions and even billions of dollars. Here is a look at some of Hollywood’s most expensive divorces:

  •      Steven Spielberg & Amy Irving: Spielberg and Irving married in 1985 and although their marriage lasted 4 years, the creator of ET and Indiana Jones had to shell out $100 million as part of a divorce agreement. The couple allegedly did have a prenuptial agreement but Irving later contested it because it written on a napkin and she didn’t have adequate legal representation. Although $100 million seems high, it was no chip off Spielberg’s block since he is reportedly worth almost $3 billion today.
  •      Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver: From Terminator to California Governor, the Arnold has been through it all. However during his split from Maria Shriver (a member of the prominent Kennedy Family), he spent somewhere between an estimated amount of $250 million and $375 million.
  •      Mel Gibson & Robin Moore: Mel and Robin got married in 1980, had seven children together and remained married for 31 years before filing for divorce. Due to a non-existing prenuptial agreement and California’s communal property laws entitling a spouse to 50% of all income earned in the duration of the marriage, Gibson’s divorce was not cheap. In fact, it was reported that he had to give up $425 million to his ex-wife Moore as part of the divorce as well as part of a child custody agreement for their youngest child.

Celebrities are not the only ones who can face significant financial consequences in the aftermath of a divorce. Although celebrities are more likely to bounce back from the costs they have incurred, seeking the help of an experienced divorce attorney can be crucial in making sure that the rest of the population can still move on with their lives.
