Can Traumatic Brain Injury Affect Your Marriage in Indiana?

Presumably, every couple who decides to get married does so with the belief that it will be forever. Yet, not every marriage will play out like a fairy tale. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in 2019, the rate of marriage in the state of Indiana was 6.2 per 1,000 people living in an area. When looking at the data from 1990 through 2019, the year 2019 had the lowest rate of marriage. The highest was in 1990 at 9.6. In 2019, the United States Census Bureau showed that the divorce rate in the state was 9 per 1,000 women aged 15 and over. Almost anything can lead to divorce. The most common causes are infidelity, domestic violence, financial issues, and incompatibility.

Life is unpredictable and anything can happen. Sometimes a traumatic accident can lead to one spouse becoming injured so severely they are permanently disabled. There are times that couples can make it through this type of adversity. It is not uncommon, however, for a couple to divorce after a catastrophic injury happens. The amount of care that one spouse may need, the complete change in lifestyle, and the stress of everything can prove to be too much for a married couple to endure.

Is it Possible to Stay Married to Your Spouse After a Traumatic Brain Injury?

While there are almost an unlimited amount of injuries that could damage a marriage, traumatic brain injury can happen as a result of many situations. Car accidents are the leading cause of personal injury and death in the United States, with more than six million of these devastating incidents taking place on an annual basis. While there are many different types of physical bodily harm that can come with these events, traumatic brain injuries are just one. Even though the severity of a TBI injury can vary, a study found that when it comes to marriage, people who suffer TBIs tend to be able to overcome the injury and the recovery process and stay together.

That is great news, considering how common the incidents that result in TBIs are. Each year in this country, there are approximately 1.5  million incidents that lead to TBI injuries. Still, the study found that while the majority of married couples evaluated stayed married after a TBI injury, 39% of the couples who were not able to keep their marriage viable saw its demise within a year of the TBI injury incident. For 68% of the other divorces recorded, it only took five years. So while it is possible to keep your marriage robust after a TBI injury, it appears that if you are unable to take on this hefty task, it will not take long before the prospect of divorce becomes a reality.
