Indiana Home to High Divorce Rate

Datingnews.com did a study that assessed divorce rates and found that New Castle, Connersville, Madison, and Richmond fall in the top 20 cities across the United States for a high incidence of divorce. All the towns that were included in the list had a rate that exceeded 15%. Comparing this to the national average of 10.9%, the states on this list have a very high divorce rate.

There are many factors that can lead to divorce. The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) reports that lack of commitment is the number one reason, while infidelity, conflict, being married too young, finances, and substance abuse round out the top six reasons.

Connersville

Coming in at #6 with a rate of approximately 16.8% is Connersville. Poverty in this community is high, as it is one of the poorest areas in the state. Monetary limitations can put a strain on even the strongest relationship.

New Castle

#8 was New Castle which is not far behind Connersville at 16.4%. Similar to Connersville, poverty is a significant hurdle in this area.

Madison

This city came in at #16 with a divorce rate of about 15.8%. The job market has a better outlook here, which has probably helped this rate be a bit lower than in the first two areas. Issues contributing to “marital strife” were other factors that seemed to play a role in divorce for couples here.

Richmond

At the bottom of the list at #18 is Richmond, with a rate of about 15.7%. The data showed that the traditional age groups that would have previously settled down are not doing so in modern times. Younger people today are not entering into marriage as often as their predecessors did, which helps decrease the divorce rate over all.
